In filters under "coding fields" select the lower and upper bound for document date.  Then you can reorder by document date by clicking "change sort criteria" and selecting document date.

To search for a date range in the global search field try something like:
document_date:[2008-06-01 2008-06-30]

Or just fill out the form in advanced search under "more document options".
